It wasn't until I was in LAX at the Qantas check-in after spending three months in the US and heard the first Australian accents and linguistic tics since I'd been away that I (a) knew I was nearly home, but (b) also appreciated that we're (apparently) not that easy to replicate. I'm not sure why that is, but I've always found it jarring when actors / performers attempt, but are unable to be convincing in the delivery, which is often at the expense of an otherwise excellent performance. Overall I guess it may be a small thing, but accents tend to be distinctive, and if they sound 'not right' then the words that are contained within them will lack their primacy, and their message diminished.
