I really hate to disagree, but the UK never had Prohibition, and spirits were a Big Thing here well before US Prohibition (think Hogarth's Gin Lane cartoon in 1751, for instance, or whisky in Scotland... pretty much always).
Fair point! I should have specified that I was referring to the earlier prohibition, back in the 18th century, which sources I’ve read suggested might have been a big factor in turning from beer and wine to harder liquor. But that’s also just speculation, and I would trust people from the UK’s take on it more than I would trust my own armchair analysis!
